Henna, drawn by hand

Bridal and party mehndi across New Hampshire.

Now booking the 2027 wedding season.

A hand with bridal henna: a mandala on the palm, stained fingertips and a lattice bracelet at the wrist

Watch the stain deepen

Natural henna comes off bright orange, then darkens for two days. Drag the slider to see your hands hour by hour.

  1. Bright orange

The paste has just flaked off and the stain is at its lightest. Keep your hands dry and warm.

  2. Copper by morning

Overnight the colour climbs. Skip soap and water for the first day.

  3. Deep red

A day in, the colour is close to its best. This is why bridal henna goes on two days early.

  4. Red-brown peak

The darkest it gets, about 48 hours after removal. It fades gently over one to three weeks.

Styles I draw

Every design is freehand, with no stencils or stamps. These are the four styles brides ask for most, and I'm happy to mix them.

Drawing of a Rajasthani design: a dense diamond lattice filling an arch, edged with dotted borders

Rajasthani

Dense jaali nets and figures from fingertip to elbow. The traditional bridal look.

Drawing of an Arabic design: a large paisley with a flower inside and trailing leafy vines

Arabic

Bold trailing vines and big keri paisleys, with skin left showing between them.

Drawing of a mandala: rings of petals, dots and scallops around a solid centre

Mandala

One centred mandala on the palm with stained fingertips. About twenty minutes a hand.

Drawing of stacked borders: zigzags, leaves, circles, scallops, chevrons and drops

Bel borders

Stacked bands for wrists and ankles, mixing net, petals and scallops. Lovely on feet.

Design inspiration

A few ideas to get you started. These designs are by other henna artists, not my own work. Save one you love, bring it along, and I'll draw something in that spirit for you.

Planning your bridal mehndi

Henna peaks two days after it comes off, so timing matters. Here's how a bridal booking runs.

  1. Three to six months out

Book your date. A 30% deposit holds it, and peak season fills early.

  2. Six weeks out

Trial on one hand. We test your stain and choose motifs: peacocks, lotus, your venue, the two of you.

  3. Two weeks out

I send a final sketch, with your partner's name hidden somewhere for them to find.

  4. The day before

Mehndi day at home or at the venue. Six to eight hours with breaks for food and photos. Family welcome.

  5. Wedding morning

The colour reaches its darkest red-brown, right on time.

Questions people ask

How long does the stain last?

One to three weeks. Palms and fingertips hold the colour longest, and the backs of hands fade first. Moisturising and washing your hands a little less both help.

Is your henna safe?

It's natural henna: powdered henna leaf, lemon juice, sugar and essential oils, nothing else. I never use "black henna", which contains PPD and can cause burns. If you have very sensitive skin or G6PD deficiency, tell me when you book.

Can I have henna while pregnant?

Natural henna is generally considered fine. I mix a batch without essential oils for pregnancies. If you're unsure, check with your doctor first.

How early should I book for my wedding?

Three to six months ahead for October to March and summer weekends. Short-notice dates do come up, so it's always worth asking.

Do you travel?

Yes. Homes, venues and hotels within 25 miles are included, and farther trips cost $1 a mile each way.

What if I can't sit still for hours?

Guests usually sit for 10 to 20 minutes. Brides get breaks for food, photos and the bathroom, and I work around the rest of your day.
